Description: Unicellular - colonial; colonies microscopic, spherical or composed of several subcolonies, free floating, enveloped by mucilaginous, colorless fine but more or less limited envelope, without any inner stalk system, cells arranged peripherally in one layer, and "hollow" (?) in the center. Cells spherical or slightly irregular elongated, usually surrounded by their own mucilaginous envelopes, sometimes of unequal size, distant from one another, without aerotopes. Reproduction "cell division" and "division of colonies". Type species described from a lagoon on Laysan Island (Hawaii, USA), another one is not well described; the type species was not revised after the first description. Coelosphaerium chlamydocystis Skuja (1964) possibly belongs to this genus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
