Description: Colonial thalli with spherical or ellipsoid cells included in a common, homogenous mucilage. Cells up to 16 &m long and 11 &m diameter. Occasionally mucilage shows slight zonation and cells grouped in twos or fours based on patterns of cell division. Cells with smooth cell walls and small numbers of parietal chloroplasts without pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by formation of autospores with contractile vacuoles, and by zoospores with two unequal flagella. Gloeobotrys known from plankton, soil, mixed with other algae and Sphagnum bogs; reported from Europe, North America and Asia. Species distinguished based on cell morphology and dimensions and number of chloroplasts.
