Pseudotrochiscia Vinatzer, 1975

Holotype species: Pseudotrochiscia areolata Vinatzer

Original publication and holotype designation: Vinatzer, G. (1975). Neue Bodenalgen aus den Dolomiten. Plant Systematics and Evolution 123: 213-235.

Description: Solitary, free-living, spherical cells with distinctly ornamented cell walls and without mucilaginous envelope. Cell walls form complex of hexagonal ridges over entire cell surface, with corners raised to form blunt projections. Cells 20-30 &m diameter. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast parietal and reticulate or fragmented, without pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction mostly by aplanospores, 3-4 &m diameter; numerous spores formed in each sporangium. Zoosporangia rare, with numerous biflagellate zoospores, 4 x 3 &m. Zoospores oval with pointed apex and anterior contractile vacuoles. Pseudotrochiscia from calcareous soil; known only in Europe from Tirolian Alps. Wall ornamentation distinctive and this should facilitate identification from other regions. Genus distinguished from Trochisciopsis by the absence of tetrads in spore formation. Ultrastructural studies required to determine relationships.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
