Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Gómez, F. (2013). Reinstatement of the dinoflagellate genus Tripos to replace Neoceratium, marine species of Ceratium (Dinophyceae, Alveolata). CICIMAR Oceanides 28(1): 1-22.
The type is Tripos muelleri Bory de St.-Vincent (1825; 526), published separately to the genus name and based on Cercaria tripos O. F. Müller, published as a zoological name; the new epithet was necessary to avoid tautonymy. - (6 Jun 2014) - M.D. Guiry

Description: Marine thecate dinoflagellate dorso-ventrally compressed, depressed ventral area and up to three horns. Gonyaulacaleans with two cingular plates in dorsal view.
