Gemmiphora Skabichevskii, 1931

Holotype species: Gemmiphora compacta Skabichevskij

Description: Thallus a compact tissue comprising non-branching filaments (sometimes tip of filament branched) up to 1.5 mm long. Filaments narrower at base, 30-60 um in diameter in middle region, each cell capable of producing secondary rhizoidal filaments. Chloroplasts discoid, light-green, without pyrenoids. Nuclei numerous. Asexual reproduction by akinetes which germinate in situ. No other reproduction known. Gemmiphora known only from Lake Baïkal, USSR. Bourrelly considers it to be close to Chaetonella.
