Description: Unicellular, free-swimming flagellates with single anterior flagellum. Cells not metabolic, flattened, elliptical/ovate, anterior and posterior broadly rounded. Cell movement creeping or semirotating. Chloroplast parietal, pale green, in the type species without pyrenoid, in other species with pyrenoid. A stigma is present in the posterior part or lacking. A distinct contractile vacuole present anteriorly in some species, lacking in others. Species of this genus were said by the author to differ from Pedinomonas in having elongate/elliptical cells with elliptical chloroplasts. However this shape occurs also in Pedinomonas, from which Fluitomonas seems to differ only in the anterior rather than lateral insertion of the flagellum. The type species is 15-18 µm long, i.e. much longer than any known species of Pedinomonas, with which the genus may be merged if it can be found again. The 6 species differ in cell shape, presence or absence of pyrenoid, eyespot and contractile vacuole.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
