Taxonomic notes
Zavarzin (1981): "The microorganisms of genus Metallogenium comprise a peculiar group of animate creatures that are very important to the manganese cycle. This may be the oldest microorganism to come down to our days unchanged because its fossils under the name Eoastrion (Barghoorn and Tyler, 1965) from the Gunflint formation (more than 109 years ago) do not differ from the present-day specimen." - (17 Aug 2021) -

This is a genus of fossil species, or a genus with a fossil type species, or a genus the type species of which was originally described as a fossil.
