Original publication and holotype designation: Henderson, R.J.F., Wilson, S.M. & Kraft, G.T. (2001). Kentrophora S.M. Wilson & Kraft, a new name for an algal genus in tribe Amansieae (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyceae). Austrobaileya 6: 175-176.

Description: Thallus erect, with flattened branches, each with an distinct midrib and marginal teeth. Branching opposite, with determinate laterals extending from the margins as circinate teeth bearing branched trichoblasts and 1–3 subapical abaxial spines. Structure uniaxial, with 6 pericentral cells: 2 lateral, 2 dorsal and 2 ventral. Lateral pericentral cells dividing to form a medulla of 2 or 3 layers, bordered by a cortex of 2 or 3 layers. Stichidia borne on the edges of marginal teeth, with abaxial sterile denticulation. Carpogonial branches abaxial on elongate marginal teeth.
