Description: Thallus, a prostrate cushion up to 500 microns diameter, of uniseriate-branched filaments, quadrate to ovate cells (9-14 microns diameter), uninucleate, with a bluish-green parietal lobed or spiral plastid lacking a pyrenoid. Sometimes forming unattached branched filaments with elongate cells (8-10 x 30-55 microns). Reproduction by monosporangia successively formed from lateral branch cells or by gelatinisation of cell walls of a thallus sector. Spherical spores, 6 to 10 microns diameter, show a gliding movement. Golgi associated with endoplasmic reticulum, plastid with peripheral thylakoid. No pit connections between derivative cells. Epiphytic on other algae. Low molecular weight carbohydrate is floridoside.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
