Description: Cells solitary, planktonic, globose, uninucleate, with a smooth cell wall. Chloroplast parietal, with a broadly ellipsoidal pyrenoid covered by grains of starch. Reproduction through autospores. Genus differs from other genera of the family in the order of the nucleotides in 18S rRNA. Distinguishing properties include high salt tolerance and high temperature tolerance.
