Description: Champiacean algae with cylindrical solid erect axes bearing hollow, septate, branches towards apices. Cystocarps ostiolate where known.

Origin of description: this description is from the original publication; it may have been modified slightly. The most recent alteration to this page was made on 2012-02-23 by M.D. Guiry.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Comments: Populations of N. subarticulatum (= Gastroclonium coulteri and Gastroclonium subarticulatum)) on the Pacific coast of N. America do not form gametophytes from northern California north to south-eastern Alaska (Guiry 1978; Hawkes & Scagel, 1986), cystocarpic and spermatangial plants being known from a limited area in southern California. However, most populations seem to persist for considerable periods from basal rhizoids and it may be that for environmental reasons that tetrasporophytes dominate in such populations. The life history is said to be of the Polysiphonia-type (West & Hommersand 1982, as G. coulteri).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
