Original publication and holotype designation: Song, G.-F., Jiang, Y.-G. & Li, R.-H. (2015). Scytolyngbya timoleontis, gen. et sp. nov. (Leptolyngbyaceae, Cyanobacteria): a novel false branching Cyanobacteria from China. Phytotaxa 224(1): 72-84, 6 figs.

Description: Thallus pale bluish green to yellow-brown. Filaments bent, entangled, nonmotile, with repeated, single false branching. Branches mostly narrower than the main filaments. Trichomes thin, monoseriate, only single within filaments, cylindrical along the whole length. Sheaths initially thin, colourless, later yellow-brown, widened, appearing firm. Cells longer than wide, cylindrical, non-granular, distinctly constricted at cross-walls, not attenuated at the ends. Apical cells rounded.
