Description: Gametophytic frond membranous; lanceolate, linear-lanceolate, obvate; epilithic; frond color variable (violet, purple, rosy, greenish); usually few cm to 30 cm in length; monostromatic; 45- 95 lm thick; vegetative cells containing one stellate plastid; sexual thalli: (i) dioecious, (ii) monoecious and divided into male and female sectors, (iii) monoecious with spermatangia and zygotosporangia intermixed in the fertile region of the thalli. Distinguished from other bladed Bangiales by rbcL and 18S sequence differences combined with warm temperate distribution and occurrence in the upper intertidal.
