Description: Thallus prostrate to predominantly erect, dorsiventral, with circinate apices; primary axes cylindrical, attached at intervals by clusters of rhizoids; lateral branches leaf-like, determinate, exogenous, forming along axis in 2 dorso-lateral series, alternating regularly from side to side. Structure with axes initially with 4 pericentral cells, the dorsal and ventral remaining undivided, the lateral pair forming monostromatic wings terminated by a few conspicuous trichoblasts, or with naked apices; mature axes with 7–10 pericentral cells, the ventral pericentral cells producing keel-like outgrowths by periclinal divisions. Spermatangial branches forming on determinate laterals. Cystocarps exogenously forming on basal or suprabasal segments of determinate branches; pericarp 2-layered. Tetrasporangia forming in curved stichidia-like branches that replace indeterminate branches, a single sporangium developing dorsally in each segment [after Abbott (1999)].
