Description: Cells normally solitary, fusiform, filiform or (strongly) elongate, straight or curved, with obtuse or rotund apices or gradually tapering into (very) long bristle-like points. After division, cells normally immediately detaching, sometimes remaining united in short, weakly filamentous configuration whereby each cell (gradually) attains specific enlarged shape, also occurring when cells possess strongly pointed poles. Cell membrane thin and hyaline, without mucilage. Chloroplast single and parietal, laminate or girdle-shaped, straight or spiral, with or without pyrenoid. Oil droplets in protoplasts. Asexual reproduction by biflagellate zoospores. Multiplication of cells by vegetative cell division. Sexual reproduction supposedly oogamous (?), but adverse conditions would induce formation of thick-walled akinetes. Koliella widely distributed in freshwater; planktonic or periphytic in stagnant water, or epilithic on flooded stones, or cryobiontic in snow and on ice. Based on vegetative cell division and occasional formation of reduced (pseudo)filamentous rows, particularly in cultures, Koliella assigned to Klebsormidiales close to Raphidonema. Cells of Koliella, however, retain basic cell shape (including (strongly) tapering ends) when united in rows, whereas in filaments of Raphidonema, pointed polar cells morphologically different from interadjacent, basically cylindrical cells. Polymorphism in culture suggests Kolliella should be merged with Raphidonema.
