Type designated in: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.

Description: Thallus a diffuse, disk-shaped network of microcopic, creeping filaments radiating out from the site of original spore germination. Disk margin irregular, formed from filaments unified centrally, but free at their margins. Each cell with a single, parietal chloroplast with central pyrenoid. Disks may remain monostromatic or become polystromatic with age. Pit plugs lacking. Growth is apical in early stages of spore development and at the margins of the disk, soon becoming diffuse. Asexual reproduction by monospores. Monosporangia formed when a vegetative cell in the disc divides into two unequal portions. The smaller cell develops into a sporangium. Asexual endospores resulting from repeated cleavage of a vegetative cell have also been reported. Sexual reproduction unknown. Growing epiphytically, epizoically, or endobiotically. Cosmopolitan distribution.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Athanasiadis, A. (2016). Phycologia Europaea Rhodophyta Vol. I. pp. [i]-xxxxviii, 1-762. Thessaloniki: Published and distributed by the author.

Comments: Reported in nearly all temperate and tropical regions, the Arctic and Sub-Antarctic Islands. However, in light of the simple morphology and presumed antiquity of these rhodophytes it is highly likely that the genus as currently composed is not monophyletic.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
