Original publication and holotype designation: Norris, R.E. (1973). A new planktonic diatom, Nanoneis hasleae gen. et sp. nov.. Norwegian Journal of Botany 20: 321-325.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Cells occurrring in irregular chains. Frustule elliptical to linear in valve view. Valves symmetrical about apical axis. Valve face and mantle with alveoli, except near center of cell; axial area hyaline, varying in width. Raphe of one valve in the middle of the valve, extending from one pole to near the middle of the valve; raphe of other valve extending from opposite pole to near center of valve; central and terminal nodules lacking. Copulae without special ornamentation. Recorded from the plankton in the warm waters of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Emend. J.A. Nienow (Nienow et al., 2017: 57)
