Empire Eukaryota
Kingdom Chromista
Phylum Ochrophyta
Class Phaeophyceae
Subclass Fucophycidae
Order Ectocarpales
Family Chordariaceae

Holotype species: Delamarea paradoxa Hariot

Currently accepted name for the type species: Delamarea attenuata (Kjellman) Rosenvinge

Original publication and holotype designation: Hariot, P. (1889). Liste des algues recuillie à l'île Miquelon par M. le dr. Delamare. Journal de Botanique (Morot) 3: 154-157, 181-183, 194-196.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Silberfeld, T., Rousseau, F. & Reviers, B. de (2014). An updated classification of brown algae (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae). Cryptogamie Algologie 35(2): 117-156.

Description: Erect thallus summer annual, solitary or caespitose, epilithic attached by a cushion like holdfast composed of interwoven rhizoidal filaments, filiform, simple, attenuated towards the base, olive to brown in color, up to about 10 cm in height, parenchymatous, solid when young and becoming hollow with age, composed of 1-2 layers of large colorless inner cells and pigmented peripheral cells which later elongate into develop into clavate paraphyses. Phaeophycean hairs present. Plurilocular sporangia conical to lanceolate. Unilocular sporangia sessile and ovate to irregular in shape. Plurilocular and unilocular sporangia usually borne on separate thalli, but occasionally mixed. Chloroplasts many discoid with pyrenoids. As to the systematic position of Delamarea, Zinova (1953) established the family Delamareaceae. Later Lund (1959) established the order Delamareales for this family presuming that Delamarea has isomorphic alternation of generations. However, Pedersen (1974) demonstrated heteromorphic life history in the species in culture and proposed placing the Delamareales in synonymy with the Dictyosiphonales with the family Delamareaceae.

Numbers of names and species: There are 2 species names in the database at present, of which 1 has been flagged as accepted taxonomically on the basis of the listed literature under the species name. In some instances, opinions on taxonomic validity differ from author to author and users are encouraged to form their own opinion. AlgaeBase is a work in progress and should not be regarded as a definitive source only as a guide to the literature..

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification. Verification of data

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
