Description: Cells spherical, solitary, unicellular, 18-33 µm in diameter, pale purple to brownish red, old cells surrounded by thick mucilaginous sheath. Chloroplast single or multiple, with many lobes extending from cell periphery to cell center. Peripheral thylakoid present. Pyrenoid located on each innermost chloroplast lobe end. One or two thylakoids present in pyrenoid matrix. Nucleus eccentric to peripheral in location. Golgi bodies scattered throughout cell associated with endoplasmic reticulum. Cells have a slow random gliding motility. Low molecular weight carbohydrate is mannitol.
