Stoechospermum Kützing, 1843
Holotype species: Stoechospermum marginatum (C.Agardh) Kützing
Original publication and holotype designation: Kützing, F.T. (1843). Phycologia generalis oder Anatomie, Physiologie und Systemkunde der Tange. Mit 80 farbig gedruckten Tafeln, gezeichnet und gravirt vom Verfasser. pp. [part 1]: [i]-xxxii, -142, [part 2:] 143-458, 1, err.], pls 1-80. Leipzig: F.A. Brockhaus.
Description: Thalli erect arising from a rhizoidal holdfast, up to 40 cm long, dichotomously-branched, branches 6-22 mm broad, complanate, without a midrib. Growth initiated from a short row of apical cells in an inrolled margin. Thallus constructed of a monostromatic outermost layer of small cortical cells overlying 7-8 layers of larger medullary cells, not regularly arranged in rows in transvere section. Sporangia forming in longitudinal marginal sori, dispersed among paraphyses, pyriform, 65-115 mm high and 15-60 mm across with one stalk cell. Antheridia in longitudinal marginal sori. The report of marginal oogonial sori (Misra 1966) requires confirmation. Stoechospermum is a poorly known genus which may prove to be monotypic as a second species from the Antilles, S. polypodioides (Lamouroux) J. Agardh has not been recorded since its description. Confusion surrounds the presence of hairs in the sporangial sorus of Stoechospermum marginatum. Papenfuss (1977) reported the presence of hairs within the sporangial sorus while Nizamuddin and Perveen (1986) observed large groups of hairs along the margins but not in sporangial sori. Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
