Description: Thalli colonial, forming 4-celled coenobia not embedded in mucilaginous envelope. Cells fusiform to spherical in surface view with small space between cells. Cells 8-32 x 3-13.5 ┬Ám, elongated perpendicular to coenobial surface with 4 cells parallel and attached along lateral walls to two others. In side view, cells lunate to bent-cylindrical with pointed to blunt ends curving away from coenobium. Cell walls smooth. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts single and parietal with single pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 2 or mostly 4 per sporangium and organized into coenobia. Daughter colonies released by longitudinal splitting of parental cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown.

Comments: Tetradesmus is planktonic in freshwater; most taxa reported from either Europe or North America, one form of T. wisconsinensis is also known from Asia and Africa.
