Description: Gametophytes and tetrasporophytes heteromorphic. Gametophytes erect, noncalcified; axes either hollow bladders, or blade-like and simple or dichotomously branched to marginally proliferous. Medulla filamentous; subcortex filamentous with rhizoids; outer cortex small-celled and compact. Dioecious; spermatangia in conceptacles. Carpogonial branches 3 to 5-celled; sterile filaments cut off of sub-carpogonial cells prior to fertilization; gonimoblast filaments produced directly from the carpogonium (Delapine & Lambert 1981) and forming the wall of the cystocarp, or from the hypogynous cell (Martin 1939) and forming the lining of the cystocarp in addition to an involucre of filaments derived from the sub-hypogynous cells. A fusion cell present at the base of the cystocarp. Carposporangia formed terminally on tufted branches projecting from the cystocarp wall; regeneration of new sporangia within old sporangial walls. Sporophytes crustose; horizontal filaments form erect filaments terminating in cruciately or decussately divided tetrasporangia.
