Description: Thallus erect, foliose and laciniate, or dichotomously or irregularly pinnately branched, firm to soft and flaccid in texture, often lubricous. Structure multiaxial, with a filamentous medulla and a cortex of subdichotomously or trichotomously branched anticlinal filaments, lacking vesicular cells. Secondary pit connections absent or extremely rare. Gametophytes monoecious or dioecious. Spermatangia arising from outer cells of the cortical filaments. Carpogonial branches 3 (–4)-celled, arising from lower cells of cortical fascicles. Fertilised carpogonia producing 1–4 connecting filaments, these growing directly to an inner cortical auxiliary cell. Gonimoblasts arising directly from auxiliary cells; all cells (except the gonimoblast initial) developing into carposporangia. Tetrasporangia scattered, lateral on cortical filaments, regularly to irregularly cruciate to obliquely divided. Life history triphasic with isomorphic gametophytes and tetrasporophytes [after Womersley & Kraft (1994); Bucher & Norris (2014)].

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
