At one time including virtually all species of Acrochaetiaceae, the genus is circumscribed (Harper & Saunders 2002) now to include only freshwater species. - (5 Oct 2010) - M.D. Guiry

Description: Thallus uniseriate filamentous, heterotrichous or with unicellular base, rarely over 5 mm high. Cells with one to several parietal chloroplasts of various shapes, always without pyrenoids. Sexual life histories, where known, with 2 free phases, in some species the gametophyte with a unicellular base and smaller than the tetrasporophyte, in others (including the type species) the generations isomorphic. Spermatangia in small corymbose clusters. Carpogonia sessile or pedicellate, distinct carpogonial filament absent. Post-fertilization development direct; carposporophytes globose with terminal sporangia; sterile involucre absent. Tetrasporangia single or in clusters, cruciately divided. Monosporangia in many species the only known form of propagation, but also produced by gametophytes and tetrasporophytes of sexual reproductive species. Worldwide, with both marine and freshwater representatives; epilithic, epi-/endophytic or epi-/endozoic. At present a rather heterogenous assembly of species, in need of revision. Emended by J.T. Harper & G.W. Saunders (2002: 471). Now comprises freshwater spp. [Acrochaetium comprises marine spp].
