Holotype species: Komarekia appendiculata (Chodat) Fott

Original publication and holotype designation: Fott, B. (1981). Nomenklatorische änderungen bei einigen Chlorokokkalalgen. Preslia 53: 1-7.

Description: Thalli colonial, forming 4-celled coenobia in one plane or tetrahedrally with distinct central space; coenobia often aggregated into compound colonies with up to 16 cells; the entire colony enclosed in structureless mucilaginous envelope. Cells in coenobia touching at one end or slightly detached, at opposite end with wall remnant, these joined end to end in compound colonies. Cells 5-8 x 3-5 µm, oval to slightly asymmetric, with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; single chloroplast cup-shaped and parietal with pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospore formation; 4 spores organized in coenobium released by rupture of parental cell wall with each cell having remnant of cell wall at one end. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Komarekia planktonic in freshwater in eutrophic rivers; reported from Europe and Asia in temperate and subtropical climates. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
