Description: Erect pinnately branched, polysiphonous thalli, attached by rhizomatous holdfasts. Upright branches up to 15 cm high, 0.5 mm broad proximally; 2-3 times pinnately branched in alternate distichous manner. Trichoblasts regularly formed in alternate pairs, each persistent, pigmented and simple or pectinately branched. Indeterminate branches alternately arranged, 1 usually present distal to a pair of trichoblasts. Axes compressed, with 4 pericentral cells which are much larger than the axial cell; cortication over all axes except branch tips. Tetrasporangia, 2 per segment, alternating transversely in subsequent segments, in short polysiphonous branchlets that replace indeterminate laterals; trichoblasts, usually simple, on each fertile segment; fertile segments swollen. Procarps on short polysiphonous branchlets that replace indeterminate laterals; a single urceolate cystocarp developing on each fertile branchlet. Male reproductive structures unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
