Anthosphaera Kamptner, 1936

Classification:
Empire Eukaryota
Kingdom Chromista
Subkingdom Hacrobia
Phylum Haptophyta
Class Coccolithophyceae
Subclass Prymnesiophycidae
Order Coccolithales
Family Calyptrosphaeraceae

Holotype species: Anthosphaera fragaria Kamptner

Original publication and holotype designation: Kamptner, E. (1936). Ueber die Coccolithineen der Sudwestküste von Istrien. Anz. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math.-Naturw. Kl. 73, nº 25: 243-247.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Kawai, H. & Nakayama, T. (2015). Introduction (Heterokontobionta p.p.), Cryptophyta, Dinophyta, Haptophyta, Heterokontophyta (except Coscinodiscophyceae, Mediophyceae, Fragilariophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Eustigmatophyceae), Chlorarachniophyta, Euglenophyta. In: Syllabus of plant families. Adolf Engler's Syllabus der Pflanzenfamilien. Ed. 13. Phototrophic eukaryotic Algae. Glaucocystophyta, Cryptophyta, Dinophyta/Dinozoa, Haptophyta, Heterokontophyta/Ochrophyta, Chlorarachnniophyta/Cercozoa, Chlorophyta, Streptophyta p.p. (Frey, W. Eds), pp. 11-64, 103-139. Stuttgart: Borntraeger Science Publishers.

Comments: Following the recent observations that many holococcolithophores are phases in the life cycles of heterococcolithophores, the family Calyptrosphaeraceae is now known to be polyphyletic, so Jordan et al. (2005) recommend abandoning its use. However, until all or most holococcolith-bearing taxa can be transferred into other existing families, they consider that it is wise to keep them together. Heimdal (1997: 752) records this genus as a member of the Order Coccosphaerales, Family Calyptrosphaeraceae.

Numbers of names and species: There are 12 species names in the database at present.

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification.
