Lectotype species: Coenochloris pyrenoidosa Korshikov
Original publication:Korshikov, A.A. (1953). Viznachnik prisnovodnihk vodorostey Ukrainsykoi RSR [Vyp] V. Pidklas Protokokovi (Protococcineae). Bakuol'ni (Vacuolales) ta Protokokovi (Protococcales) [The Freshwater Algae of the Ukrainian SSR. V. Sub-Class Protococcineae. Vacuolales and Protococcales]. pp. 1-439. Kyjv [Kiev]: Akad. NAUK URSR.
Type designated in Fott, B. (1974). Taxonomie der palmelloiden Chlorococcales (Familie Palmogloeaceae). Preslia 46: 1-31.
Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.
Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Tsarenko, P.M. (2011). Sphaeropleales. In: Algae of Ukraine: diversity, nomenclature, taxonomy, ecology and geography. Volume 3: Chlorophyta. (Tsarenko, P.M., Wasser, S.P. & Nevo, E. Eds), pp. 280-355. Ruggell: A.R.A. Gantner Verlag K.-G..
Description: Thalli 2-8 to many celled spherical to irregular shaped colonies to 100 &;m in diameter. Mucilage structureless with distinct cell wall remnants. Cells spherical with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast morphology highly variable, always parietal and single but with compact, cup-shaped, lobed or stellate forms; pyrenoid single. Asexual reproduction by autospores produced 2-4-8 within sporangia and released by rupture or splitting of cell wall into two to several portions. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Coenochloris usually planktonic. Most species reported only from Europe, with one species, C. mucolamellata from Cuba; two other possible species from Antarctica (as Sphaerocystis). There is some taxonomic confusion between Coenochloris and Sphaerocystis. Coenochloris distinguished from Coenococcus and Coenocystis by the presence of cell wall remnants after autospore formation. With the description of Korschpalmella and Neocystis, generic concept of Coenochloris considerably restricted compared to Komárek &; Fott (1983).

Numbers of names and species: There are 26 species names in the database at present, as well as 2 infraspecific names. Of the species names, 10 have been flagged as accepted taxonomically on the basis of the listed literature under the species name. In some instances, opinions on taxonomic validity differ from author to author and users are encouraged to form their own opinion. AlgaeBase is a work in progress and should not be regarded as a definitive source only as a guide to the literature..
Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification. Verification of data
Users are responsible for verifying the accuracy of information before use, as noted on the website Content page.
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
