Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Anabaena is Anabaena oscillarioides Bory ex Bornet & Flahault .

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Macrospermum mysorense (Gonzalves & Kamat) Komárek.

Type Information
Type locality: "Attached to blades of grass in a puddle at Devarayi, Mysore State" [India]; (Gonzalves & Kamat 1959: 237) Notes: Collected on 15th November 1951 . Type preserved in the personal collection of the senior author (No. M. 12).
