The type species (lectotype) of the genus Palmella is Palmella hyalina Lyngbye.

Type locality: "the Red Snow (discovered during the late Northern Expedition, under the command of Captain Ross, on the 17th of August, 1818, in Baffin's Bay, in lat. 75° 54', N. and long. 67° 15'. W.)"; (Bauer 1819: 222) Notes: No original material can be discovered for this name.
