This name first appeared in J.Agardh (1849: 85) with a type locality of "Hab. ad La Guayra Indiae occidenlalis." [La Guaira, Venezeula] It later appeared in Kützing (1849: 732) attributed to J.Agardh, with the same type locality but with Liebmann as the collector (in herb. Binder). Frederik Michael Liebmann (10 October 1813 - 29 October 1856) was a Danish botanist and collector who travelled to Cuba and Mexico in 1840; on his return to Denmark in 1845 he was appointed Professor of Botany at the University of Copenhagen. - (22 May 2019) - M.D. Guiry
