Silva, Basson & Moe (1996: 667) write "This variety is based on Fucus lendigerus Turner (not F. lendigerus Linnaeus; Sargassum lendigerum...) and must be accredited to directly to Grunow." This conclusion results from the comment of Grunow (loc. cit.) "Haec varietas est sine ullo dubio planta a Turnero depicta, sed in dubio manet, qui sit Fucus lendigerus Linne, qua de cause nomen S. cymosi J. Agardhii adoptavi". However, Linda Irvine (e-mail, 2 July 2006) points out that Turner's illustration was actually based on Linnaeus's specimen and thus the variety is indeed based on Linnaeus's material. - (2 Jul 2006) - Wendy Guiry
