The type species (lectotype) of the genus Coscinodiscus is Coscinodiscus argus Ehrenberg.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Coscinodiscus regius Wallich.

Type locality: Indian Ocean (Weissflog); Bay of Bengal ( Dr. Wallich, 1857); (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: 'C. regius was originally distributed under the MS. name of Rex. C. regius was first found, in the Bay of Bengal in 1857, by Dr. Wallich.' (INA).
