Type locality: "Hab. ad öras Novae Hollandiae, ramulis Cystophorae innata." [Port Phillip Heads, Victoria, Australia fide Womersley, 1967: 230] (Agardh 1882: 621). Holotype: Harvey; LD Herb. Alg. Agardh 46193 (Womersley 1987: 97). Notes: Isotypes were distributed as Alg. Austr. exs. n:o 102.

Taxonomic notes
According to Silva et al. (1996) the name Leathesia umbellata has been misapplied to this species by Sonder (1846 [1846-1848]: 154) and J. Agardh (1848b: 51).
