Type locality: "Hab. in mari Indiae orientalis" [Mauritius] (Agardh 1841: 17). Type: LD 34664 [Kylin 1932: pl. 10: fig. 2] (Yoshida 1998: 802). Notes: The type locality, Mauritius was first recorded by Doty (1988: 180). He notes that the holotype for Sphaerococcus serra J. Agardh is believed to have been illustrated by Kylin (1932: pl. 10, fig. 21) as Agardh Herbarium Specimen No. 34664.
