The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: South Otago, Kaka Point (46°22.80'S, 169°46.90'E) (D'Archino & al. 2017: 555). Lectotype: M. Finlayson; 30 April 1945; WELT A022958 (VWL No. 6045) (D'Archino & al. 2017: 555, fig. 21). Notes: Isotypes: WELT A022959 - A022961 (VWL No. 6045), A022962 (VWL No. 6078).
