The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Streblocladia rhododactyla (Harvey) D’Archino, B.Kim & M.S.Kim.
