The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This is a marine species.
Type locality: D’Urville Island, Cook Strait, brought up by the dredge in 5 fathoms water (Kim & al. 2018: 44). Lectotype: D. Lyall; Aug. 1849; BM-K (Kim & al. 2018: 44).
