The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: Cardiff Hall beach, St. Ann Parish, Jamaica (Index Nominum Algarum). Type: T. F. Goreau et al. ; 21.vii.1961; 30 m. Jamaica Institute Mus. Sc. A. 3337 (Index Nominum Algarum Notes: Isotype at U. Mich.

Named for T. F. Goreau, a coral reef biologist who collected the plant in Jamaica.
