Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrus crispus Stackhouse.

Type Information
Type locality: Norway; (Gunnerus 1776: 122) Holotype: TRH; Specimen 971.1 (without further data) (Jørgensen 2012: 1091) Notes: "Gunnerus did not refer to any particular specimen, restricting himself to a general comment that the species is common in Norwegian waters, but he referred to his own tab. III fig. 4 which clearly is based on specimen 971.1, the only one named Fucus norvegicus in his herbarium (without any data, but with a reference to the number of this species in the Flora). Foslie (1886) let J.G. Agardh make an anatomical study of this specimen which he regarded as the holotype, and Agardh confirmed that it belonged in Chondrus crispus. This is undoubtedly the illustrated specimen and accordingly the holotype." (Jørgensen 2012: 1091)
