The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia brumalis (Mumford) S.C.Lindstrom.

Type locality: Deadman's Bay, San Juan Island, Washington, USA; (Mumford 1976: 328) Holotype: Mumford 330; 15 December 1971; High intertidal zone, growing on rock, mixed with Porphyra torta; UBC; 52021 (Mumford 1976: 328) Notes: Isotypes: CANA, US, WTU, UC (Sutherland et al. 2011).
