The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Furugelmi I., Peter the Great Bay, Siberia (Perestenko 1980: 31). Type: A.N. Golikov; May. 16, 1965; on Chorda filum at 2.5 - 5 m depth. (Perestenko 1980: 31).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Thallus blade-like, growing in dense groups, reddish-purple, elongate-oval, widely-lanceolate, (8)935 cm long, 2.57 cm wide, monostromatic, (17)2138(85) m thick; sessile, with small disc-like attachment; cordate or rosette-like at base; margins undulate, lobed, entire or sometimes cleft. Cells from surface disordered, roundish, roundish-polygonal, rectangular, (15)1922.5×(15)22.531 m. In transverse section, cells palisade-like, of equal diameter or transversely elongate, 19.533×1556 m. Cell walls thick, to 12 m thick, becoming thinner to the margins. Plant dioecious. Spermatangia and gametangia develop along the margins thickening to 70 m. Growing on sandy-gravel bottom, in shallow bays and epiphytic on Chorda filum, intertidal to upper subtidal (35 m deep). Note: This species is potential as human food. Distribution: Low boreal, Pacific species. Okhotsk Sea, Sea of Japan.
