The type species (lectotype) of the genus Olivia is Olivia botryoides (Linnaeus) S.F.Gray.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trentepohlia jolithus (Linnaeus) Wallroth.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), violet, refers to the blue-red colours nearer blue (Stearn 1973).
