Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Antithamnion is Antithamnion cruciatum (C.Agardh) Nägeli.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Antithamnion densum (Suhr) M.Howe.

Type locality: Ocean Beach, San Diego County, California, USA; (Athanasiadis 1996: 161) Lectotype: N.L.Gardner No. 5090; UC; (Athanasiadis 1996: 161) Notes: Lectotype selection by Wollaston on 21.i.1970 published by Athanasiadis (1996: 161), but INA has "Holotype: UC 296619."

Origin of Species Name
Adjective A (Latin), bristle-like, setaceous (Stearn 1973).
