Syntype localities: Plymouth and Berwick-on-Tweed, England Lectotype: BM (Woelkerling & Womersley 1994: 72). Notes: Plymouth, Sept. 1895; G. Brebner; Berwick-on-Tweed; Batters (Index Nominum Algarum).

Origin of species name
resembling, or growing on or in species of the genus Bonnemaisonia.
