Eponomy
Named for the Rev. Hugh Davies (1739-1821), Welsh botanist and Anglican clergyman; author of "Welsh Botanology" (1813).

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Lectotype locality: probably north Wales (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 97). Lectotype: BM (Woelkerling & Womersley 1994: 52). Notes: This type locality was first described by Dixon & L.Irvine (1977b: 90) (Silva et al., 1996). According to Woelkerling & Womersley in Womerley (1994: 52) the type material is from Ireland or Wales (Swansea) (see Woelkerling, 1973b: 552, 594; Dixon & Irvine, 1977b: 90). [ Holotype: NMW; Type Locality: Bantry Bay , Ireland (Hutchins) (Womersley, 1971: 29].
