Type locality: Sussex, England (Index Nominum Algarum). Type: Ellis and Ehret; 1754; (Index Nominum Algarum Notes: Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 47) give the following data: Lectotype: Ellis (1768), pl. 18, fig. H; unlocalized (?England).

Adjective (Latin), ciliate (Stearn 1973).
