This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Mesothamnion.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spongoclonium caribaeum (Børgesen) M.J.Wynne
Type locality: "St. Jan: Off Annaberg" [Annaberg, St. John, Virgin Islands] (Børgesen 1917: 216). Holotype: dredged from 30 m. C (Yoshida 1998: 917).
