Publication details
Herposiphonia tenella (C.Agardh) Ambronn 1880: 197

Published in: Ambronn, H. (1880). Über einige Fälle von Bilateralität bei den Florideen. Botanische Zeitung 38: 161-174, 177-185, 193-200, 209-216, 225-233, Plates III, IV.

This is the type species (lectotype) of the genus Herposiphonia.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Basionym
Hutchinsia tenella C.Agardh

Type information
Type locality: Sicily (Silva & al. 1996: 499).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), delicate (Stearn 1985).

Homotypic Synonym(s)
Hutchinsia tenella C.Agardh 1828
Polysiphonia tenella (C.Agardh) Moris & De Notaris 1839
Herposiphonia secunda f. tenella (C.Agardh) M.J.Wynne 1985

Nomenclatural notes
According to Lawson & John (1987: 314), "Wynne (1985b) has pointed out that Herposiphonia secunda is the correct name for ... H. tenella... . He considers tenella as a form of H. secunda and also proposes the transfer of H. tenella var. densa to it, accepting our opinion that H. densa should be treated as a forma (see Lawson & John, 1982: 333). First valid combination appears to be that of Falkenberg (1901) as early combinations made by Nägeli and by Ambronn were not validly published (see South and Tittley, 1986)."

Taxonomic notes
Furnari et al. (2003) follow Schneider & Searles (1997) and Masuda & Kogame (2000) in considering H. secunda and H. tenella as distinct species.

According to Diaz-Tapia & Bárbara (2013: 338), this is a synonym of Herposiphonia secunda f. tenella. - (24 Jan 2014) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.
