The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Osmundea pinnatifida (Hudson) Stackhouse

Type locality: Harwich, Essex, England (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 534). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 403, footnote).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), pinnately cleft (Stearn 1973).
