Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type information
Type locality: SW side of Astrolabe Reef, Fiji (Verbruggen, Littler & Littler 2007: 514). Holotype: Hanging from rocks on deep vertical walls or north facing or shaded shallow walls of crevices and caves to 50 m deep. US DML40143 (Verbruggen, Littler & Littler 2007: 514).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), pygmy, dwarf (Stearn 1985).
